Six Aspects of a State-of-Art Secondary Cybersecurity Program
DARK Enterprises led a research project to identify the characteristics of state-of-art secondary cybersecurity education programs. The result is this model. Schools can use this to self-assess the maturity of their cybersecurity program. CSEC is referenced in the first aspect of the model. CSEC stands for Cybersecurity Education Curriculum Guidelines.
In 2018 the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) endorsed the CSEC Curriculum Guidelines for Post-Secondary Degree Programs in Cybersecurity. In 2020, the ACM Committee for Computing Education in Community Colleges released similar cybersecurity curriculum guidance for two-year programs known as Cyber2yr2020. Cyber2yr2020 is based on CSEC2017, and influenced by the canonical sources e.g., CAE-CD 2Y 2019 knowledge units and the NICE cybersecurity workforce framework, and other relevant sources.
Work continued in 2024, to identify the essential topics to be covered in foundational courses. The primary goal of the update is to provide a foundational cybersecurity education framework that can be implemented by both post-secondary institutions and high schools in support of dual credit courses in cybersecurity.
