Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) Wrap-Up

The tenth anniversary WiCyS conference was held in Nashville in April. A few highlights from the conference include Moriah Walker's presentation titled "Who Can Teach High School Cyber." Moriah is a cybersecurity teacher at Lakota Cyber Academy and shared data from Cyber Supply (https://cybersupply.org/) to highlight the importance of teaching cybersecurity.

ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity Exam (CC)

ISC2 asked us to share information about their CC certification with our community. So we are doing that and more.
ISC2 launched the Certification in Cybersecurity (CC) exam in August of 2022.
Their goal is to certify one million people around the world.
The certification is aimed at foundational knowledge, skills and abilities for an entry level cybersecurity role.
The ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity Examination weights are as follows:
Security Principles 26%
Business Continuity (BC), Disaster Recover (DR) & Incident 10%
Access Controls Concepts 22%
Network Security 24%
Security Operations 18%
Total 100%
We have looked at the certification and concluded the following:
  1. Like many certification exams, this one seems to be heavily vocabulary focused.
  2. It is generally age appropriate for high school students.
  3. The Teach Cyber curriculum teaches most of the vocabulary, so if you use our curriculum, it could be a good certification to consider.
This said, we know that Teach Cyber goes much deeper than vocabulary with heavy emphasis on conceptual understanding and skill development. We know that you, as teachers, especially those of you in CTE, are attentive to what certifications are approved and by whom. We have not done extensive research, but know as of now, the Certification in Cybersecurity (CC) exam is currently not listed in the DoD Approved 8570 Baseline Certification. And lastly, this certification is on the approved CTE certification list for some states, but we do not have an exhaustive list of states that offer it or we would share that too. If you choose to pursue the CC exam for your students we highly recommend verifying what is approved in your state.
